When people say we look alike
We both say otherwise
She has dark brown hair like the color of her eyes
While I have black hair that shines brightly when exposed to the sunlight
She is a mountain
While I am a short tree
She is eleven
While I’m fourteen
I just don’t see
The resemblance they see
I fight with her every day
Not lasting a second in harmony
Our arguments are like tennis matches
Throwing insults back and forth
At times I pretend she doesn't exist
Each word we let out collides,
Making a dent in our relationship
Then
I think of that day
It was sunny
The brightness blinded me
Didn’t know where I was going
But knew who I was meeting
I carried the purple blanket
It was soft
Like the pillows on her bed
That were set up before she even arrived
She had big, dark eyes
They stared at me
While her chubby cheeks
Blushed as a red balloon
I look back at this moment
And wonder
How can I hate her?
This human being I did not know
But was mesmerized the second I saw her
I crumbled down
Into a pile of rubble
When I saw her cry
She seemed so frail
What seemed to me as a joke
Left a scar on her heart
As I saw her cry
I saw the chubby baby
I once cradled in my arms
So small and delicate
So pure and innocent
My unforgiving words punched me in the back
Making me feel remorseful
So shallow
I felt so unreal
So I tell her
You are my missing piece
Although you may be younger
It seems you know more than me
You are as kind as an elephant
You are as smart as can be
So the next time
Someone says
I look just like you
I will nod
And say
I know
This is really cute! You have really good imagery, especially where you describe first seeing her as a baby.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you made the poem personal and talked about your life.
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that you wrote this about someone you really love. Great use of poetic devices as well. Great poem overall.
